MCJC Book Club Pick Set During Civil War

By Ellen Morton

MCJC's Book Club has made its first book selection of the new year:  The Thread Collectors by Shaunna J. Edwards & Alyson Richman.  This just-released book is set in 1863, when a young black woman embroiders intricate maps on repurposed cloth to help enslaved men flee and join the Union Army.  She crosses paths with a Jewish seamstress who helps her discover that even the most delicate threads have the capacity for salvation.  MCJC's Book Club will meet on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7:00 pm, and likely will be both in person at MCJC and virtually via Zoom.

As an added bonus, MCJC's book club facilitator, Rachel Kamin, has arranged a Zoom discussion with the two authors for Nov. 2 at 8:00 pm for participants in her various book clubs, including MCJC.  More information on accessing the author's discussion will be provided closer to the date.

The MCJC Book Club meets four times a year, roughly every other month, and explores Jewish-themed literature selected by our facilitator, Rachel Kamin, who is a librarian and director of lifelong learning at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El.  A nominal donation is requested from the Book Club participants to cover the cost of having a facilitator.  For more information on the Book Club, which is open to all...even non-MCJC members...contact Ellen Morton at ellen.r.morton@gmail.com.
